Como rises on the southern point of the western branch of the Lario; the city has roman origin, according to the legend it was founded by Caesar, in the year 59 b.C., and today it has about 80.000 inhabitants.
The historical center of the city is enclosed by medieval walls dated back to 1169 (Como is also called "città murata" taht is "walled city") and it is characterized by ancient palaces placed near modern rationalist constructions.
Among the most important monuments there is the Cathedral, imposing building resulting from a work that lasted four centuries: the construction in fact begun in 1396 and concluded with the dome in 1740. This long time of construction has created a Cathedral where we can sees, harmoniously together, different architectonic styles. Inside, there are important works of art, among which a wooden altar dedicated to the patron of the city, Sant' Abbondio, dated back to 14th century.
Other important church of the city is San Fedele: it is in the center of the city, in the homonymous public square, and dates back to the 7th century, when it was still dedicated to Sant' Eufemia. From the year 964 it is dedicated to San Fedele, and has a beautiful Romanesque apse and some frescoes of the ' 400. The public square on which there is the church was the ancient place of the market of the grain, important historical pole of the city; on the southern corner of the public square we can see two houses of 16th century with wooden structure and bricks, following a constructive technique of Nordic origin.
The lakeside of Como offers the opportunity of beautiful walking tours: following the pedestrian avenue that passes in front of the Tempio Voltiano (a small museum dedicated to Alessandro Volta) you can reach Villa Olmo, perhaps the most famous of the villas of Como. The villa, in neoclassical style, is today property of the Municipality of Como and is used for cultural manifestations; the garden is always open and there are benches to sit in the shadow and admire the beautiful view on the city and on the lake.
